September 15: Nancy to Heming Click on small photos for a full size picture. Today we depart Nancy and have a bucolic ride in the country, and get to meet some interesting people. Our route takes us on secondary roads (D roads) that have virtually no traffic. There will be a lot of climbing today, though mostly rolling hills. Our route takes us through villages, past cattle farms, and dairys - at one, we see a newborn calf. Not far from Nancy, there is a dirt path along the highway that is packed with people. We figure them for pilgrims on their way to the cathedral in the next town. We attract a lot of attention, gathering waves and smiles. At one point, the crowd crosses the highway. They stop to let us pass and give us a rousing ovation - it feels like we're in the Tour de France. In Einville, we meet Kinga and Alain. At Rechicourt-Le-Chateau, we meet the Henrys. After we leave the Henry's, we're treated to a 4 1/2 kilometer downhill run into Heming. We're the only guests in the hotel tonight and they will be closed tomorrow, so no breakfast. |
